As senior Emily Frye fills out her bachelorette questionnaire she jokingly scribbles down Chucky Cheese. This is Frye’s second year being involved in the East’s annual Bachelor Auction. This year, the auction will take place on Nov. 15 in the cafeteria from 7-8 P.M. where all the profits made will benefit the Johnson Country Christmas Bureau‘s can drive.
This is the second year that junior StuCo has put on the auction. Junior Class President A.J. Orth says that there is a lot that goes into prepping for the auction.
“We have to rely on a lot of our bachelors and bachelorettes to help us prepare,” Orth said. “Once they fill the questionnaires, we can pile a script, make a program, then we can make a PowerPoint just to make sure everything goes well.”
What makes this year’s auction different then last year’s, is that girls are being auctioned too. There are two guys and two girls in the sophomore, junior and senior grades that are being auctioned. Who they decided to place in the auction, was based on who they thought people would want to bid on. Once they finalized a list of good prospective candidates, they approached them and hoped they’d want to be a part of it.
Frye was a member of StuCo last year and helped with the auction. Now she is eager to be in it.
This is senior Lanie Leek’s first time participating in the auction and says she is excited because she has heard a lot of people talk about how exciting it is.
“It sounded like a creative idea that would be fun to be a part of,” Leek said. “I think that having girls in it this year will definitely make it more fun, too.”
After bidding on someone in the auction, the bachelors, bachelorettes and their dates head out for one big group date. This year they are having a dinner cooked by one of the parents, followed by going out for ice cream and hanging out together.
Orth says due to last year’s success, he thinks this year’s will be just as successful if not better than before. And even though the auction is a new fundraiser, junior StuCo wants to make having the auction a tradition.
“I’m sure we’ll do it again next year, then after that it will be up to the classes that follow,” Orth said. “But it is a really fun event that is not like anything else that is done at East.”
StuCo sponsor Brenda Fishman thinks that this event is an important one for East to have because the Christmas Bureau is in need of donations, and it’s an amusing way to go about raising awareness.
“It’s entertaining for the kids,” Fishman said. “And this year they have started earlier, been more organized, and put out more publicity so I think it will be a huge success.”
