Former Student Found Guilty in Spillman Murder Case

On Sept. 7, former East student Stephen Reed stood in front of a Wyandotte County jury, waiting for six hours, to hear his fate. Last spring, Reed along with his cousin and friends, was charged with the murder of Ryder Spillman, a student at Shawnee Mission North. Spillman was found shot and killed in the parking lot of Thomas A. Edison Elementary on April 23. Police eventually found evidence that Reed and other members of his “New Mafia” gang were behind the young man’s murder.

Reed has been convicted of second degree-murder and possession of a firearm by a minor. He faces up to over 50 years in prison. His cousin Shane Reed, who pleaded guilty, was previously sentenced to 18 months in juvenile confinement.
