News Briefs: Debate Update Jan. 7-8

SME DEBATERS PLACE AT DCI AND NOVICE STATE!

Congratulations to the team of Mark Towster and Wil Kenney for placing 10th out of 36 teams at the Debate Coaches’ Invitational at Washburn Rural this weekend, and to the team of Chris Carey and Michael Hill for placing 11th. Both teams finished with a 4-3 record and Michael Hill received a 5th place speaker award out of the 72 speakers in attendance. Debaters must qualify to attend DCI by receiving two bids throughout the season.

Also, congratulations to the team of Max Werner and Dhruba Biswas for advancing to octofinals at Novice State (also at Washburn Rural) and tying for 9th place out of 130 teams in attendance. Max also received straight 1’s in prelims. The team of Ada Throckmorton and Utsa Ramaswami went 4-1 in prelims but missed breaking to octo-finals on speaker points.
