The East art gallery is anticipating the unveiling of the newest gallery and show — a latine exhibit to present the latine community and art to East.
The show will consist of four to six Latine professionals that work in the community and about half a dozen East students that identify as latino. The students will be displaying works of art that connect them to their culture and heritage.
East art teacher Adam Finkleston explains his excitement and the significance this event will have on the Latine community at East.
“The whole idea is to try to make the Latine community at East more visible in the sense of celebrating and acknowledging the diversity of the culture.” Finkleston said.
Finkelston looks forward to working with students he hasn’t worked with before and he plans to grow the event in the future, possibly adding music and dancing that would capture the Latine culture.
Due to the shortened week of fall break, the show will have a soft launch reception after school around Oct. 20 where students can enjoy the show and light refreshments that will be served in the East art gallery. It will last through November.
Prairie Village residents have recently expressed complaints with the late trash pick-up from local trash company Republic Services.
Due to staffing issues, high demand for commercial drivers licenses and an increase in trash trucks breaking down, the trash delays each week have been difficult for the community and citizens of Prairie Village according to City Clerk, Adam Geffert.
Geffert, also an East parent, emphasizes the effort that the council is performing to take care of this issue.
“City staff shares frustration along with the community.” Geffert said, “We are cautiously optimistic that things are going to improve and this won’t be an issue for much longer.”
Ever since hiring Republic Services in 2016, the company has failed to meet trash pickup deadlines according to the Prairie Village Council. Just last November they suffered from staffing issues and delays with pickup, which resulted in Prairie Village fining Republic Services up to $7,000 in 2023.
The results of the 2023 Nobel Prizes were published on Oct. 5 with categories spanning from literature to physiology.
Since 1901, the prestigious award has been given out to people who perform notable discoveries and researches in their fields. Alfred Noble, a Swedish chemist, inventor, and entrepreneur, left much of his wealth to establish the award in 1901.
This year, Moungi Bawendi of MIT, Louis Brus of Columbia University, and Alexei Ekimov of Nanocrystals Technology, were ~awarded for their work in the chemistry field. The three discovered that quantum dots are tiny particles that glow when exposed in red and blue lights.
East chemistry teacher Steve Appier believes that this is a noteworthy discovery in the chemistry community.
“The work done by the three individuals awarded the prize was significant in the development of the process to produce the quantum dots having a specific size,” Appier said.“The work done by each of the three individuals awarded the prize was significant in the development of the process to produce quantum dots having a specific size.’’
Appier believes this discovery will benefit students in Chemistry 1, who will soon be learning about electromagnetic radiation, as well as light and the quantum nature of small particles like electrons.
Chemistry club member and junior Anna Holland also expresses her thoughts on the discovery.
“The fact that only the size of the particle determines the light was really important because it was able to be used on TVs and computer screens,” Holland said. “And so the discovery led to the development of many technologies.”
Sophomore Lyla Weeks is starting her second year on Harbinger Staff and she couldn't be more excited. Outside of school, Lyla spends her time dancing on the SME Lancer Dancers dance team at East, studio dance and figure skating. She is beginning her first year on the SME Tennis team and is involved in many AP and Honors classes at East. She looks forward to all of the amazing opportunities Harbinger will provide for her and her peers this semester. »
