Apple released new phones called the iPhone XS and the XS Max on Sept. 12. These products introduced customers to an array of new features — improved water and dust resistance, more durable glass, updated Face ID and Dual camera — that have never been seen in an Apple product before.
The XS is currently priced at $999 and the XS max at $1,099 because of all the new features according to Apple.
The XS has Face ID while the iPhone 8 only has Touch ID. The screen of the XS is 1.1 inches larger than the iPhone 8 as well.
Included in the XS display is the all screen design that allows the user to use a lage canvas to navigate the mobile device. This is the largest display ever on an iPhone measuring 6.5 inches for the iPhone XS Max and 5.8-inches for the iPhone XS.
“I used to do graphic design for a living and so I’m big on color accuracy, clarity, and the screen is just fantastic,” teacher Robert Bickers said.
The water resistance has also improved — going from a 1 meter depth with the iPhone 8 to a 2 meter depth with the iPhone XS.
The 8 includes an A11 bionic chip where the XS consists of an A12 bionic chip (the chip basically makes the iphone work) with a next-generation Neural Engine, according to Apple. This chip allows the phone to improve the graphics up to 50% faster on visually demanding apps and perform 5 trillion operations a second. The chip also produces strong battery life.
Logging in with your Face ID was made simpler to use and Apple considers it to be one of the most secure ways to unlock, login and pay on the new iPhone. The advanced upgrade can now identify a face with a hat or glasses on.
“The Face ID is a lot faster than before,” teacher Jeffrey Finnie said.
The A12 bionic is 15% faster than the A11. The advanced design allows the phone to recognize patterns, make predictions, and learn from experiences.
Another new phone feature introduced was the Dual camera system. The Smart HDR acquires more highlight and shadow detail to the photos that are taken. The Bokeh and Depth Control allow you to adjust the depth of field after you shoot. Other qualities that come with the camera include face detection, facial landmarking, and depth mapping.
Other characteristics of the new iPhone include the all-day battery life, the encryption of messages and FaceTime conversations, which allows customers to make their messages and FaceTime conversations private, limited ad tracking, adjustable font sizes, and more.
“You know it really isn’t a super exciting year for iphone, it’s just a little upgrade,” Finnie said.
