After the departure of past head coach Charles Cooper and their third-straight losing season, the Lancer volleyball team is feeling confident about the acquisition of new head coach Patty Phillips.
Last season, the Lancer volleyball team went 5-29, losing to every single Shawnee Mission team. After the season ended, third-year head coach Charles Cooper left the team.
“Personally I liked our coach last year but high school volleyball might not have been the best fit for him,” junior Mary Booton said. “It was quite a dramatic process but now that we have Patty Phillips as our coach it’s better. We gained a really great coach as a result.”
Phillips is meant to do and fill the role coach Dustin Delaney did with the football team. That role, specifically, is to turn te volleyball program into a headline sport for the Shawnee Mission East sports program.
“I think she is a great coach,” freshman Ally Huffman said, “She is very experienced and has strong intentions of building the east volleyball program.”
On and off the court, too, Patty has been involved with the community. Even though she is a very intense and hard working coach according to Booton, she has a personal friendly side most coaches seem to forgot about.
“As a person she’s great as well,” Booton said. “She seems to really enjoy it. She’s the type of coach we need at the varsity level.”
