SHARE’s annual volleyball tournament was held last night in the main gym with 14 student teams of six. Teams had an entry fee of four toilet paper rolls per teammate, and after spectator donations, the tournament collected over 350 rolls to donate to SafeHome — a local nonprofit that provides shelter for domestic abuse victims.
“I think we get way more donations than we always expect,” SHARE executive Nora Hill said. “People brought in cereal boxes for the dodgeball tournament and we had an insane stack at the end of the night. I think the volleyball tournament will be really beneficial towards Safe Home.”
Matches were 11 minutes each and first team to 10 in an instant elimination bracket. Team “C.N.H.A.T.P” won the tournament overall, with seniors Teddy Saylor, Nick Lindmark, Jack Jones, Conor Neusel, Wes Lyerly and Joey Hoffman. Team “Pepper Pals” won “best costume,” with team members and seniors Abi Limbird, Emma Kuhlman, Greyson Imm, Anna Thelen, Rowan Gibson, Charlie Crossley and Reese Algren.
“Our tournament is a good way to give back,” SHARE director Erin Billingsley said. “So it’s a way for us to have fun and at the same time, raise supplies.”
SHARE executives planned out the tournament by filming Instagram reels to advertise, making the bracket and refereeing games. The volleyball tournament is similar to other annual SHARE events, like the dodgeball tournament for cereal boxes and Mr. Cansas for cans.
“[The tournament] is one of our big events for the year and we’ve been looking forward to it for a while,” SHARE executive Laynie Manning said.
While the tournament mostly gets upperclassmen teams and winners, the graduating senior class encourages younger participants to enter in the years to come.
“It’s probably a more underground event at East compared to Lancer Day and whatnot,” senior Abi Limbird said. “But it is a tradition that I really look forward to every year. It lives up to the hype every time.”
Starting his second year on staff, sophomore Michael Yi is pumped for the next 16 issues of the Harbinger as a writer, designer, copy editor, sports section editor and ads manager. When he’s not interviewing subjects or designing in Adobe, he’s probably watching old movies or hanging out with friends. Outside of Harbinger, he plays tennis and is on STUCO. »
