When she was brought to tears after her dad played a Fleet Foxes record for her at just four years old, sophomore Emmy Barrett knew she would be forever touched by music.
Whether it’s “cardigan” by Taylor Swift or “All I Am” by Alice in Chains, Emmy and her dad share their love for music from Rap to Rhythm and blues. According to Emmy, songs provide a great medium for people to express themselves.
“I think music is one of the best ways you can bond with someone,” Emmy said. “There’s so much out there for anyone to listen to.”
Her dad Casey Barrett appreciates the time the pair have spent together visiting their favorite record stores: Mills Record Company, Brothers Music KC and Vinyl Renaissance. While Casey has a new Fluance player set up in their living room, he got Emmy her own Audio Technica so she can play records in her room too.
“I have counted my records and I [currently] have 60,” Emmy said. “But my dad has shelves and shelves full… I don’t think he’ll ever get bored of buying them.”
Except records aren’t the only sounds that flood the Barrett home. At any time of day, Casey can be found practicing his electric guitar for a gig with his rock band “Dinsdale.” The band has played at events such as PorchFest and at the entrance of Arrowhead stadium.
Emmy is now learning how to play guitar from lessons with her dad between going to different concerts, which Casey tries to bring her to as many as he can.
“My favorite music memory with Emmy was seeing War on Drugs with her,” Casey said. “Specifically during the show when she said she felt like she was levitating.”
They’ve most recently seen War on Drugs and Jerry Cantrell — Casey’s favorite guitarist — and their upcoming planned concerts together are Fleet Foxes, Jason Isbell and Zac Bryan.
“We share things that we enjoy,” Casey said. “It might be rap, it might be FooFighters, it might be War on Drugs, it might even be random acoustic music. We truly just have a love of music.”
