Due to an unpredicted power outage causing an early release on Feb. 24, seniors are four hours and three minutes short of the state requirement to graduate. The district has decided the time will be made up with a “Senior to Senior” activity on April 10.
Seniors will pair up with different senior citizens in the community and interview them about their lives. The goal is to generate meaningful conversations and interactions without a cellphone before heading off to school in the fall according to Dr. Sherman.
After the interview, students will write an essay about what they’ve learned and then give it to the senior citizen they interviewed. Freshmen, sophomores and juniors will not have to attend school on this day.
According to Dr. Sherman, another possible option is changing the school start time to 7:35 a.m. for 35 days to gradually make up minutes.
Senior Katie Drake appreciates the purpose behind the activity rather than just tacking on five minutes to every day.
“I like the activity we’re doing because I feel like volunteering actually accomplishes something rather than just going to a seminar at school and doing absolutely nothing,” Drake said.
Those who choose not to participate will receive an absence resembling a normal school day.
