The morning of Oct. 24, the Walker family returned to their 103rd and Wenonga lane home, only to find ashes.
The Walkers, who were visiting their oldest son and East graduate, Jack Walker, in St. Louis, were not injured in the fire. The family includes mother Sharon Walker, junior Eli Walker, East graduate Jack Walker, and younger siblings Abby and Dan Walker. Neighbors posted a sign outside of the home reading “Family is Safe”. The only casualties of the fire were the family turtle and dog.
According to Sharon, neighbors woke up to find the home aflame, and called emergency services between 4:00 and 4:30 am. The house was put out soon afterwords.
Leawood Fire Marshall Gene Hunter says that due to the severe damage of burning the investigation into the cause of the fire is still undergoing. The fire department hopes to know the cause of the fire by this Thursday.
Junior Keagan Jacobs, who lives adjacent to the walker home, heard an explosion around the same time emergency services were alerted, and ran out of his home to see his neighbors house enveloped in flames. He was able to take a picture to document the event.
Sharon says that for at least tonight, the family will stay with neighbors.
“We’ll see what tomorrow brings.” Sharon said.
