After winning the regional championships, the Varsity Lancers softball team will be playing for the state title. This is the first time that the East softball team has ever qualified for the state championship.
“It’s really a satisfying feeling,” sophomore outfielder Erin McGinley said. “Especially for the seniors, since they’ve been working towards this for so long. For all of us, it’s just a really cool feeling to be a part of something that made history at East.”
The Lancers beat Shawnee Mission West 9-3 and Olathe North 7-5 to qualify. The championship tournament will begin on May 25, where the Lady Lancers will mostly face teams from the Olathe and Blue Valley districts. After beginning their regular season 12-0, the team expressed feelings of confidence and pride going into these championship games.
“At state, it’s a big deal and it’s sudden death,” sophomore left fielder Savannah Bellem said. “But we’re just feeling really relieved to have gotten this far. A lot of the pressure’s off now, actually, and I think we’re going to be playing much more relaxed. We’re just really excited for this experience.”
