La Mode Du Jour: I. Love. Organizing.

I love organizing. It not only physically cleans my habitat, but also mentally brings me peace. I first found my love of organizing in ninth grade when I re-painted my bedroom. The sense of new beginnings and pride of my own space led me to re-organizing every nook and cranny in my room. Here are some tips on how to get organized, and stay that way:

  1. Start section by section. This will take time, so don’t get overwhelmed unnecessarily. Let’s say your room has shelves, a dresser, a closet and a desk. Try doing one of those areas a weekend! Then by the end of the month…you’ll be set.

  2. Once you pick your poison (where to start first), empty out the whole thing. Seriously, do it.  It feels great and you can really see all that shit you have cooped up in there. Separating your items into piles is a great way to start compartmentalizing your stuff. I usually do “KEEP,” “DONATE,” and “THROW AWAY.” This makes it quick and easy to see what you’ve got goin’ on whether it’s art supplies or old clothes.

  3. Once you have your “KEEP” pile, keep in mind (that was a joke) that you want to not only have room for these items, but also that you’ll utilize them.

I organize my own closet on the daily. One thing that I have learned, is that if I can’t see it, I won’t wear it. Having your items visible is important because it’s similar to keeping inventory: if you know what you have, you know what you need and what you don’t. The easiest way to maintain closet organization, is to always put away clean laundry ASAP, and keep clutter out of the way. By clutter I mean single socks on the ground, a granola bar wrapper etc.

I recently re-organized my shoe-storing-system in my closet. They used to be just sitting on the floor of the closet or on the edges of my room, but now I added a shoe storage hanger and a shelf. I love this new system because it looks great and I can see exactly what I have. On the shelf are my winter boots and some heels. Once it gets warmer, I plan on switching out those boots for my sandals, which are currently in their shoe boxes to the side.

I am so inspired by organized closets, and it definitely makes it easier to get dressed in the morning. I love helping friends, family and clients get organized…click here to hang out with me while I help you organize your world.
