When junior Ada Throckmorton woke up and her mom told her the news, she thought it was a mistake. Soon though, her disbelief turned to shock, and excitement.
Throckmorton had gotten a perfect score on her SAT – on her first try. She took the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), a test that helps prepare students for the SAT they will take later in the year. After getting her results from the October test she took with many other students in the junior class she realized that her math needed improvement. So, over Winter Break, she put together a study schedule. And everyday leading up to the test in mid-January she studied after she finished her homework.
Throckmorton wanted to get the test out of the way and decided to sign up for the earliest test date. After leaving the test site, Throckmorton felt terrible because those questionable questions, those tricky test problems, stuck in her head.
Throckmorton has known about her score for the past few months but decided not to tell anyone at school about it. She said that she just wanted to keep it private, but after her picture and a short story about her score appeared on the Shawnee Mission School District homepage the Friday before Spring Break, it was tough to keep it quiet much longer.
“Everyone has been really cool about it,” Throckmorton said.
Throckmorton has decided that she probably won’t take the ACT because she applying to schools that are outside of the Midwest and coastal schools more often look at the SAT. She hopes to pursue a career in science because she is passionate about the environment.
