The journalism program at East received four Best of Show placings, multiple individual awards and a Pacemaker for the print publication this past weekend at the National Scholastic Press Association/Journalism Education Association’s Fall National High School Journalism Convention. The convention, which brings student journalists from around the nation and around the world together, features classes and seminars from industry professionals and a wide range of competitions for students to enter. At each convention, the NSPA hosts a “Best of Show” competition, where schools present at the convention may enter their publication or publications for judging. During the fall convention the NSPA also announces an annual award called the Pacemaker to print publications. Online and yearbook publications earning the prestigious award are announced in the spring.
The Harbinger Online was awarded first place NSPA “Best of Show” for an online publication in the Small School category. The Harbinger print publication was award second place NSPA “Best of Show” in the Newsmagazine category and second place in the Newspaper Special Edition category. The Hauberk was awarded third place NSPA “Best of Show” for yearbook for the 325+ Page category.
Many students were also presented with individual awards in competitions such as photography, writing and design. Andrew Goble, class of 2011, was awarded NSPA News Story of the Year for his article on cyber bullying and received an honorable mention in the NSPA Illustration competition. Senior Kat Buchanan was awarded NSPA Editorial/Opinion Story of the Year. Senior Danielle Norton was awarded second place in NSPA Feature Picture of the Year. Lindsey Hartnett, class of 2011, was awarded third place NSPA News Picture of the Year. Grant Heinlein and Andrea Zecy, class of 2011, were awarded an honorable mention in the NSPA Environmental Portrait competition. Senior Toni Aguiar was awarded second place NSPA Infographic.
Duncan MacLachlan, Becca Brownlee and Andrew Beasley earned an “excellent” for their entry in the Online News Package write-off hosted by JEA. Jake Crandall was awarded a “superior” in Sports Photography. Emily Donovan earned an “honorable mention” for her podcast on sex education. Tom Lynch earned an “excellent” in Commentary Writing. Toni Aguiar earned a “superior” in the Newsmagazine: Layout category. Helena Buchmann was awarded a “superior” in the Yearbook Caption: Academics category. Brendan Dulohery earned an “honorable mention” in the category of Newspaper News/Feature Photography. Grant Kendall earned an “excellent” in the category of Portrait Photography.
