With summer just around the corner, East students would be putting the finishing touches on their job applications for a summer gig — whether that be at a local country club, public pool or restaurant. But with the uncertainty in society today, students are already planning for their jobs to be canceled.
The Prairie Village council had a meeting discussing whether or not the pools were going to open this summer. The lifeguard training and CPR training has been canceled, so as of now, there is no way for new staff to get certified. Even if the pools open, alternate training options will need to be created for the lifeguards.
The Fairway Pool has also canceled lifeguard training, but are still encouraging their workers to complete online courses, as they are planning on opening the pools this summer.
Other Country Club Pools, such as Round Hill have released statements to their staff briefing them about the subject.
“We’ve gotten a few updates that there’s a possibility they may open the pool late but they’re really just waiting to see,” freshman Emily Winter said. “They also recommended that if we have another job opportunity to take it for the summer.”
Junior Molly Schumm works at the Sopra Salon. They are closed right now but to keep business going, they are doing curbside pickups and putting together product packages.
“Sopra is also doing tutorials on their Instagram stories to keep active,” Schumm says. “As of now we are trying to reopen whenever the lockdown is over.”
