The National Honor Society at East recently announced to English teacher Jeannette Bonjour that she was NHS teacher of the year, due to her commitment to teaching and her students.
Senior Gillian O’Connell, one of the four NHS executive officers, said that one of the main reasons Bonjour was deserving of this award was because of her irrevocable love of teaching.
“As one of her students, I can tell that she really loves what she does, and she’s always so happy when she’s teaching,” O’Connell, a senior, said. “She’s always there for help with questions about her class and other classes. She even helped a bunch of seniors with their senior essays. She genuinely cares about the student’s well-being and tries really hard to help students love school as much as she does.”
Senior Celeste Rinner, also one of Bonjour’s students, says that she voted for Bonjour because of the teacher’s free spirit and dedication to her students.
“I voted for her because she is a great teacher and she likes to involve her students in the lessons,” Rinner said. “She’s not afraid to embarrass herself to make a point. She loosens us up which helps us learn.”
All of the NHS members gathered before school, then led a procession through her first hour class on the morning of Jan. 7 where they applauded the weepy-eyed teacher.
“I was completely flabbergasted when I found out!” Bonjour said. “I got a little teary, to be totally honest. It was completely amazing that my students set this all up for me and I’m so grateful. This is such an honor, especially from this senior class, as it’s extremely special to me.”
