On Saturday, Nov. 16, Charles Schollenberger and members of the Johnson County Democratic party will be holding a recreation of Jack Kennedy’s visit to East over 50 years ago. The event will be held at East. Actor Peter Leondidis will play the role of Kennedy, reciting his speech.
Kennedy visited East on October 22, 1960. He gave a speech to some of his supporters in the cafeteria. That day Kennedy visited all of Kansas, stopping in Wichita, Grandview and a rally at Municipal Auditorium.
“It’s really interesting that Senator Kennedy was here at East,” Principal John McKinney said. “A legend, an icon of America was here in the building when he was a senator, so I think really that’s pretty cool and I appreciate Charles Schollenberger bringing that to the community’s attention, and I really look forward to seeing it.”
Chambers choir will be performing at the event.
“I think it’s really cool that Kennedy gave a speech at East,” junior Chambers member Clara Martin said. “It’s really exciting to be a part of the re-enactment of this part of East and American history.”
