New to East Club, or NTEC, is a club dedicated to creating a welcoming environment for new East students, whether that be transfer students, or freshmen. It meets every Thursday after school in Ms. Halksworth’s classroom, 511. This club was created to introduce new students who have recently moved to the East area. NTEC helps new students make friends and get to know East and all of its traditions. By introducing students to each other, the club hopes that no student is left eating by themselves at lunch or without someone to attend football games and school musicals with, according to the club’s founder, Maddie Seymour. Currently there are around 15 people in attendance.
In the club, they place ice breaker games like working together on a scavenger hunt around the school to become more acquainted with the building. There are also activities such as pizza parties during lunch, and watching the Lancer Day Parade together.
Along with Seymour, Kaiden Koerner and senior Jared Taylor helped to start this club. Even though the club’s purpose is to help new students, anyone is invited to participate.
“Everyone is welcome no matter how long they have attended the school,” Seymour said.
Seymore was inspired to create NTEC because she started attending East in the middle of her freshman year after moving to Kansas City from a small town. She found it difficult to meet new people and get involved in the activities at the school for the first couple months. She hopes this club will make sure everyone else feels welcomed from the minute they come in the East doors.
