It’s 11:30 p.m. on a Tuesday night. Tears are welling up as the quadratic formula sits on the screen. The hourly rate for a decent tutor is more than two times the average babysitting check. You’re stuck and this assignment needs to be turned in before the homework quiz on Wednesday. Sophomores Ava Cooper and Anohita Paul have had their share of late night homework breakdowns, so they decided to create Homework Club as a solution.
Since middle school, Cooper and Paul envisioned creating a homework club as an alternative to their daily routine of FaceTiming each other after school to hit the books. This year, with the help of their sponsor, English teacher Ms. Jackson, Cooper and Paul decided to make Homework Club happen. The club is open to anyone who needs help with schoolwork, as well as anyone who wants to assist others.
“[Starting Homework Club was] kind of a way for us to bring our tradition to school so we can get more involved at East and help others who are struggling,” Cooper said.
Currently, club meetings are held virtually every Thursday after school from 2:45-3:20 p.m. However, Cooper and Paul are hopeful that they can move to an in-person, hands-on model soon. When school does return to in-person, club meetings will be held in Ms. Jackson’s room.
Homework Club is a resource for all students – from those taking AP and Honors courses to those a few years behind in math. Different students have different skills, so if you struggle in one area there’s always someone who can help you, and vice versa. Cooper and Paul hope that students will grow more confident in their own academic skills by working with others.
Paul believes that Homework Club will help students be more motivated to complete assignments.
“When Ava and I did homework together, it really benefited us and we felt like we got the information down more” Paul said. “Also, especially with online school, I noticed more people struggling to keep track of their assignments and stay motivated.”
