Humans of East: Adya Burdick

By

Having made an Instagram account for her unique graphic design creations (@adyabdesign), junior Adya Burdick is following in her mother’s footsteps with her passion for art. Along with graphic design, Burdick enjoys art forms such as dancing, drawing and classic designing.

Why did you first start designing, and how did you develop it into a hobby?

“My mom is an art teacher so I’ve always enjoyed taking art classes, but I really got into art and graphic designing over winter break.”

What is your favorite part about designing and why do you continue it?

“I think the process of making the designs is fun. When I begin a design I don’t know how to start, but as I keep going and designing I get lots of new ideas. I also enjoy the fact that I get to be creative and add fun features to the finished product, along with finding inspiration from Pinterest.”

How do you share your designs with friends and family?

“I have an Instagram account. I started the account as a way to let people know that I make designs [and] for them to see my work. My hope is to make a sweatshirt and clothing business with my designs, and the Instagram account is a great way to let people know what my art looks like before I make clothing.”

What is the meaning behind the designs you make, and why do you make them?

“I like designing with inspirational quotes. Mental health awareness is very important [to] me, and with the internet being a negative place, it’s always nice to make happy and positive quotes for people to look for on Instagram.”

What are your design hopes for the future?

“Next year I am taking a new class called Graphic Design Management at East which gives opportunities to start a small business like I want to — to make money and promote the art we create. For college, I am wanting to major in Graphic Design, and not just make a profit off of my art but also share it with people in the world.”
