As the weather warms up, a weekly ice cream break is an essential for me. I’m always up for an Andy’s trip to get an Oreo Concrete or Mcdonald’s for a chocolate milkshake
Luckily, a new stop has opened up at 5905 Main St. called French Custard, featuring homemade flavors like honeycomb and toffee.
The bright blue walls made the shop stand out as I walked onto the white-black hexagon-tiled floor. I was hit with the scent of sugary waffle cones and greeted by staff eager to help.
A single scoop was $4.50 and my cone of choice — a cake cone — was $0.25. A second scoop would be $3.00 and their homemade waffle cone is $1.50.
After looking over the flavors a couple of times I decided to try a variety. First was “Mocha Madness.” From the title alone, it was obvious this was my kind of flavor. In my experience, coffee ice cream flavors can be a hit or miss but this one was smooth and creamy. The espresso flavor wasn’t overbearing and was even sweet. The combination of the chocolate added a darker flavor, and with the light espresso flavor this was heaven.
Next on my list was Honeycomb, a housemade original. Their housemade originals consist of only milk, cream, eggs and sugar. Because they gave me two scoops in one cup, this ended up combining with the toffee ice cream which both are made from a vanilla base. The toffee was divided into clusters that had the consistency of hard cotton candy and were extremely sugary. I couldn’t separate the honeycomb from the toffee and wouldn’t purchase another cup of these two flavors.
The last flavor choice was a classic — mint chocolate chip. I’m so used to the iconic bright green pigment of mint ice cream so I was surprised when the ice cream was cream-colored instead. It came with thin dark chocolate slices on top. The mint flavor was sharp and fresh and the chocolate had a hard crunch. The flavor was nothing new to me and didn’t stand out. Though I wouldn’t purchase this flavor again, it’s perfect for mint chip fans.
With its friendly staff and to-die-for mocha ice cream, French Custard will be getting another visit from me whenever I’m craving a flavor-packed cone of custard.
