When “The Moment,” started I felt like I was in a night club, but ironically, I was just watching Charli XCX’s new film.
Neon-green strobe lights beamed from the movie theater screen as soon as it started playing. “360” from Charli XCX's album “brat” blasted through the theater's speakers.
The film takes on an atypical “mockumentary” — a type of film or television program depicting fictional events presented as a documentary — style, telling the story of Charli XCX’s tour for “brat.”
The film is a critique and parody of celebrity culture, and it felt like an accurate representation. “The Moment” is a hilarious depiction of detached celebrities, and it kept me laughing throughout the film with its satirical characters.
Charli XCX plays herself as a typical, vain Hollywood celebrity. She treats her workers terribly, talks to them like children and throughout the film maintains an indifferent, bratty attitude.
For example, when Charli XCX is on a casual weekend trip in Ibiza, she bumps into Kendall Jenner after getting a facial. Charli is annoyed, and seeing Jenner is a huge burden because she just wants to quietly enjoy her getaway. Not only was this funny to watch, but it was admirable to see Charli play herself and be self-aware of how celebrity culture can sometimes be.
Another fictional character that was entertaining to see on screen was Johannes. Johannes is a long-haired, crystal necklace-wearing filmmaker and he wants to make a film for the tour of “brat.”
Throughout the filmmaking process, Johannes tries to take creative control of the entire “brat” tour, and he changes the entire concept of the tour by making it child-friendly and trite.
While his decisions were uncalled for and a bit enraging to watch, his character added a realistic representation of men who are egotistical and like to mansplain which made him comical.
Although the characters and celebrity appearances were a big part of the appeal for the movie, the plot lines of the movie also kept me engaged and my favorite was the “brat” credit card scandal.
In the movie — and in real life — Charli is offered a brand deal for neon-green credit cards that say “brat.” The cards are available for purchase only for fans that are in the LGBTQ+ community, and the catch is, if you buy the credit card, you have a chance at winning tickets to the tour.
The whole scandal that enraged her fans kept me invested throughout, and the fact that the issue was such a first-world problem for the characters made it even more interesting.
The egotistical stars' mindset was the movie's theme, and while the decisions and story made me cringe at times, it was an excellent portrayal of a lavish celebrity lifestyle.
“The Moment” is worth watching for any Charli XCX lover or young adult in general. Plus, it will make you want to blast the “brat” album all the way home from the theater.
