I love Halloween. I love dressing up, I love decorations, I love candy. But there’s one thing I don’t like. Horror movies. Every year friends pester me to watch them and every year I refuse. So, if you’re like me and want to celebrate the holiday without the nightmares, take a look below. These are my favorite Halloween movies that aren’t scary.
Corpse Bride – A Tim Burton classic, starring Depp and Bonham-Carter (who else?.)
Rocky Horror Picture Show – The perfect movie if you want to give your Halloween that “what the hell did I just watch” twist. And, if you get the chance, I strongly recommend going to the monthly showing at the Alamo Drafthouse downtown.
The Addams Family – I love this, as long as I don’t question why the Addams family still manages to be one of the most functional families on screen.
Shaun of the Dead – Beautifully combines wry British humor with a zombie apocolypse to create one of my all time favorites. If you like it, go ahead and watch the other two in the trilogy, they’re all hysterical.
Zombieland – And while we’re on zombie movies, I beseech you to watch this gem. As if Woody Harrelson wasn’t enough to make this movie great, they throw in Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone with black hair and a cheeky cameo from Bill Murray.
Warm Bodies – It may not be an Oscar-winner, but this quirky zombie-romance is sure to warm your heart.
Scary Movie – If you’re in the mood for an inappropriate horror movie parody – look no further. This movie expertly jams every scary movie trope into one ridiculous feature.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer – What would a spooky night, or any night, be without my no. 1 show, BTVS? The perfect mix of strong female leads, 90s dress sense, sassy puns and vampires – it’s like they made this show especially for me.
