Around the corner from Shawnee Mission East sits Fairway, one of the earliest suburban neighborhoods in Kansas, where the construction of one of the first Google Fiber buildings in the country began. With many of KC’s earliest buildings located in this historic region, the placement of this new technology came as a shock. Google Fiber is a new system being set up around the country picking certain cities in each state that will get the incredibly fast broadband. Fiber is blowing other broadband providers out of the water like Time Warner Cable and Everest., with increasing speeds on internet and TV up to 100 times the average speed of your current broadband.
Starting in June of last summer, Phase 1, the initial launch of the system, has already begun. Houses are already advertising their new Google Fiber signs which were administered to each new customer. Current Fairway resident Nora Engelken, a sophomore at East , thinks the new system just the beginning of Kansas City’s leap into the technology world.
“I think Google Fiber is going to be an improvement in my neighborhood,” Engelken says. “It will bring better business, improve network, provide faster internet and it will pave the way for more changes to technology in in the future.”
