This year brings the potential end of an era for Shawnee Mission East sports. Head tennis coach, Sue Chipman has announced that she is contemplating retirement. When asked about it, Chipman simply answered, “I haven’t decided yet, It’s still up in the air.”
The Lady Lancers bring back a very strong team from last year with undefeated singles state champion, senior Mimi Fotopoulos, and doubles champions, senior Mollie Cooper and junior Elizabeth Wilcox. Fotopolous has already committed to play at Tennessee next year, and is hoping to put together another undefeated season. Freshmen Elizabeth Barnickel and Stephanie Wilcox have also gotten players and coaches excited as they have made their way into the team’s top six.
Tryouts started on Monday, August 15th and the team has been practicing daily since then. Varsity’s first match was at East on Thursday, September 1st against the Pembroke Hill Raiders. The Lady Lancers came out victorious, winning 8-1, and started off their season exactly how they wanted.
Next week, the Lady Lancers have a busy week with matches on Monday and Tuesday against Shawnee Mission North and Shawnee Mission West. Then on Wednesday, they travel to Topeka to play the Trojans of Topeka West High School.
With the talent and experience that the Lady Lancers bring they hope to take home a league title for the second year in a row and make another strong run at state.
