Girls Leadership Program Involves East Students

The Girls Leadership Program is a program which gives 30 high school girls from the Kansas City metropolitan area the opportunity to donate a grant of $15,000 to a charitable organization to help girls and women.

This year’s board of girls has decided to allocate their money to a project run by an organization called Urban League. They work with a middle school in Kansas City’s urban core to help the girls there get a head start for high school.

They provide book bags and stationary equipment, hygiene products, tutoring, classes on money management and other kinds of things. Their primary goal is to get the girls to a point where they’ll be ready to succeed in high school.  They also follow them along the way, helping them with SAT and ACT prep and in looking at colleges.

“I think the best part of being a member of Girls [Leadership Program] is just all of the girls I’ve gotten to meet,” senior Clara Ma said. “I probably would have never had the privilege of meeting them if it weren’t for this program. There’s a lot I’ve learned from them, and I’m grateful for that.”

The program is open to all current freshmen, sophomores, and juniors in high school. Applications for next year’s board are due March 5 in the counseling office.
