The Girls’ varsity basketball team began their season against their most anticipated rival, Shawnee Mission South, the Lancers ended up losing 58-51. The game took place on Thursday Dec. 1.
From the tip off to the last buzzer the aggression in the game was high. East had three players foul out and by the second quarter both teams were in the bonus suffering from foul trouble.
The two teams both started the game strong, though South began to hold a steady lead. East kept up, finishing the first quarter only down by four. The score was 12-8 South.
The second quarter was no different, both teams scored steadily which led to South holding their small lead. The first half ended with South ahead by eight, the score 21-13. East then finished the third quarter down by 14 points.
In the fourth quarter East started to gain momentum by closing down their point deficit. When Kyle Haverty made her fourth 3-pointer of the night with only a minute left the team became only down by 4 points. Being down by that amount with less than a minute left, the only option becomes fouling. South proved they had worked on free throws after two of their players made both their free throws with less than a minute remaining. The game was an all out fight according to junior and varsity player Toni Englund. But in the end East took the loss, losing by seven points.
“Our help defense needs to be better and we need to do a better job of boxing out, “Englund said. “Free throws really killed us against South, but I thought we fought hard and have a lot of potential.”
