After finishing off the sweep of Olathe schools, the the 5-0 Lancers will face their biggest test since Olathe South, the 4-1 Firebirds of Lawrence Free State. The Firebirds only loss came to Olathe South by a slim margin of 38-35.
Kyle McFarland will be the key player the Lancer’s defense will have to stop in order to be successful. In McFarland’s last game, the dual threat quarterback passed for 162 yards and two touchdowns along with 128 yards on the ground. But the Lancers cannot forget about McFarland’s favorite target, receiver Tye Hughes. Hughes is fourth in the Sunflower League in receiving yards with 345 and three touchdowns. He is also dangerous when returning punts with two touchdowns this season.
The Firebirds defense will have to deal with the Lancer’s dynamic offensive duo of quarterback Jordan Darling and receiver Connor Rellihan. In their last game versus Olathe East, they connected for two touchdowns. Rellihan’s 527 receiving yards leads the league. Along with that, he is threat on the defensive side of the ball at cornerback with two interceptions. Rellihan will mostly likely be going up against Hughes, which will be great matchup to watch.
This could end up deciding the Sunflower League title at the end of the season. If the Lancers get the victory, they we be riding high at 6-0 and in charge of their own destiny for league. If Free State wins, they will be tied first along with Lawrence, SM West and SM East.
