Senior Sylvia MohrSting made history on Saturday when she became the first girls’ SM East wrestler to place in the state tournament. MohrSting placed fifth in the event, which featured four wrestlers from the girls’ team and four wrestlers from the boys’ team. The event took place on Feb. 28-March 1 at the Advent Sports Park at Bluhawk Sports Complex in Overland Park. No other SM East wrestlers placed.
After an opening ceremony featuring a reading of the Wrestler’s Creed, and the singing of the National Anthem, wrestling commenced with three mats dedicated to girls and three to boys. Wrestling began with the smallest weight classes in each round, working up to the heavyweight wrestlers. Each wrestler competed on the ‘front side’ of the bracket until they lost, sending them to the ‘back side’ where they could still place. Losing twice meant the end of a wrestler’s season.
Also at the tournament, the Kansas State High School Activities Association recognized Head Coach Chip Ufford for his 20 years of service coaching for SM East.
