The Lancers defeated one of their longest rivaled teams, the Shawnee Mission South Raiders, 89-84 Tuesday night at East. The score remained close throughout the night as the greatest lead either team had at any point in the game was held by SMS midway through the third quarter leading SME by nine points. The scores at the end of the first four quarters are as follows: 19-23, 31-35, 42-47, and 61-61. South maintained the lead at the end of each of the first three quarters. With a tied score at the end of regulation, the game was sent into a four-minute period of overtime, which ended with another tied score of 69-69. The second four-minute period of overtime ended 74-74, sending the game into a third four-minute period of overtime. At the end of the third period of overtime, the Lancers came out on top defeating the Raiders 89-84. The top two scorers for East were senior Noah Kurlbaum with 32 points and junior Tony Friend with 18 points. The top two scorers for South were seniors Skyler Rhoads with 26 points and Jake Potthoff with 18 points. At halftime of the game the Varsity Lancer Dancers debuted their hip-hop routine they will be competing with at Nationals in February. Each school’s student section had a designated theme for Tuesday’s game. East’s was ‘Fiesta’ and South’s was ‘80s Workout’. “Everybody played so well… everybody played together. It was a special moment because I’ve been playing these kids since elementary school so it was just cool to be able to beat them and have everybody play their best game. Everybody came out feeling like they did something for the team,” Kurlbaum said. “That front row always goes crazy so it’s always really fun. Also being able to interact with the crowd, I’ve never really done that before so it was really cool.”
