On April 20, students around the nation walked out of their classes and school to show support for the victims of gun violence in schools and to advocate for better and safer gun laws. At 10:00 am, SME students left their classes to meet on the football field where a discussiont took place between student leaders and their peers. In attendance was Jay Sidie, who is running for a House of Representatives seat in Washington, D.C. According to Sidie, the biggest thing that the walkout accomplishes is how “[the walkout] brings awareness to the issue [of gun violence in schools] and how it affects everyone.” Sidie, who has a daughter that attends SME relayed that her daughter “didn’t come to school… because of the rumors that there may be gun violence.”
