Gallery: Sophomore Pickleball Tournament Fundraiser

In their cozy winter costumes, 18 sophomores went out to Harmon Park to participate in a pickleball tournament for the annual Sophomore Student Council can-drive fundraiser on Sunday, Nov. 10. The theme for costumes was ugly sweaters or winter wear, like a Santa hat or glow up lights. To enter the tournament the teams had to bring six cans of food, including soup, fruit, vegetables, etc. The team that won the pickleball tournament and the two best dressed individuals both received gift cards. The tournament began at 11 a.m. and ended at 1 p.m. with a total of nine teams entered. Ultimately, sophomores Justin Jones and Fritz Kostner won the tournament and Ava Slocum and Will Wallace won best dressed individuals.

In the first round of the bracket, four teams moved on and five were eliminated. The remaining four teams consisted of sophomores Annabel Burkhart and Grace Pei, Lucas Steinbacher and Ben Alt, Justin Jones and Fritz Kostner and Will Wallace and Jude Anderson. After the semi-finals took place, two teams were eliminated, Anderson and Wallace along with Burkhart and Pei. In the championship match, Jones and Kostner competed against Steinbacher and Alt in a game of best of three. Jones and Kostner won the first game. The second game went into overtime, eventually leading to another win for Jones and Kostner, securing their victory of the 2024 StuCo can-drive pickleball tournament.

The champion teammates were both given $25 Chipotle gift cards along with a trophy that will be given out during the upcoming school week. The winners of the best dressed, Slocum and Wallace, were awarded a $15 Chick-Fil-A gift card.

At the end of the tournament, a total of 78 cans were collected from participating members of the tournament. The cans will be delivered to the Johnson County Christmas Bureau to help support families in need during the holiday season.
