With nine different schools competing in the regional meet at the Johnson County Community College 5k course on Saturday, Oct. 22, SME’s varsity Cross Country Team’s boys placed first, along with the girls, who also placed first overall. The boys had not won the regionals meet since 2015, and the girls had not won the regionals meet since 1993. The top finishers for East were senior Wyatt Haughton, running a time of 15:31.20 and placing first, and junior Lida Padgett, who ran a time of 18:57.65 and placed second. The boys team achieved a score of 34 points, with an average time of 16:31.42, which was 38 points under second place. The girls team got a score of 44 points, running an average time of 20:31, which was 17 points under second place. The boys and girls varsity teams will move on to state, which is on Saturday, Oct. 29 at Rim Rock Farm. The boys will be racing at 10:35 a.m., and the girls will be racing at 12:20 p.m. The boys’ awards for their race will be at 1:05 p.m., and the girls’ awards for their race will be at 1:20 p.m.

As a fourth year harbinger staffer, senior Mason Sajna is excited to be a leader on staff this year as a Video Editor, Photo Mentor and Equipment Manager. When he isn’t in the J room editing a video or trying to find some tripod piece, Mason is running as a varsity track and cross country runner and is in five AP classes. When things finally slow down, Mason likes to spend his free time with his friends or just hang out at home. »
