Chemistry teachers Steven Appier, Jerrod Bardwell and Susan Hallstrom along with IB and AP Chemistry students hosted East’s 26th annual Mole Day on Friday, Oct. 20.

Around 200 chemistry students attended and received 6.02 extra credit points, according to AP Chemistry student and junior Reagan Lagerstrom.

IB and AP Chemistry students arrived in the cafeteria to set up games, decorations and music for the Mole Day theme “The Incredimoles.” Lagerstrom said Chemistry 1 students began showing up around 5:35-6:02 a.m. to make sure they got the extra credit, while organizers like herself woke up at 4 a.m.

“We did a countdown for [the last] 10 seconds until 6:02 a.m,” IB Chemistry student and junior Anna Holland said. “[Junior] Sophie Leonard and I and [seniors] Abi Limbird and Anna Thelen blew up helium balloons before we did the Mole salute.”

Students gathered in the cafeteria for juice, bagels and donuts before participating in games like “Whack-A-Mole,” “Quantum Toss,”  “Molicious,” “Ring Toss” and “Molesicul Chairs,” according to Chemistry 1 students and junior Kate Rose.

The chemistry teachers projected random photos and “science” songs including “The Electromagnetic Spectrum Song” to play on the large screen in the front of the cafeteria.

Near the end when the points from all the games were added up, Bardwell’s team was in first place with Appier and Hallstrom’s classes tied, so they competed for second place. According to Holland, they did a “Mole Chase” where senior Jack Joyce — dressed in a mole costume — ran around the cafeteria until one of two students from each second place class caught him to win. Appier’s classes ultimately won the competition earning the most enrichment points between the three chemistry teachers. Students earned points to settle the tie-breaker with a sudden death “Famoley Fued” round between Bardwell and Appier’s classes.
