Starting 73 feet away, junior Cate Conrad ran full

Starting 73 feet away, junior Cate Conrad ran full speed at the 11’3” pole vaulting bar. After a warmup that felt mediocre, she didn’t expect much. She’d never cleared this height before.

Conrad ran 12 steps on the Blue Valley High School track, launched herself off the track with her left foot and hoisted herself up using the 13-foot pole vault. She flipped over in the air and her back hit the memory-foam-like mat.

She had just cleared a new height for the first time since last May.

I’ve read 91 books in the past year, and only th

I’ve read 91 books in the past year, and only three have made me audibly gasp or set my drink down to process a plot point, but “Fearless,” by Lauren Roberts, was among the few that did. Alongside the shock, the book also left me in tears, staring at the wall after finishing the epilogue. Considering I’ve cried over three books in my life, this story is now one of my favorites.

“Fearless” is the last of the fantasy romance trilogy, “Powerless.” The main plot of these books is centered around a kingdom divided by the Ordinaries, who have no powers, and the Elites, who do.

I take my Goodreads account and ratings very seriously, so when I rated this a five out of five, those stars were earned. I found myself constantly taking pictures of pages to come back and dissect them — a tell-tale sign of a good book.

Then-juniors Elizabeth Starr and Zoe McCamy woke up every morning at 7 to the sounds of birds chirping and rain falling on the tin roof of the compound they were staying in with 18 other girls.

After a breakfast of rice, beans, a cheese called queso de freir and plantains, Starr and McCamy spent the day and the following week mixing concrete for a pastor’s home. They also took care of single mothers’ kids at the local San Isidro, Costa Rica day care.

“You subconsciously just feel better about yourself, in a sense,” McCamy said. “And I’m not doing it for myself. I’m doing it for everyone else.”

Sophomore Catherine Sullivan played her fifth game

Sophomore Catherine Sullivan played her fifth game for the C team this year after tearing her ACL during the first week of last year’s season. Sullivan was unable to play her freshman year and was finally cleared to play right before this year’s tryouts. Within the first 20 minutes of the game, Girls C team scored against Olathe South. Sophomore Annie Trenkle scored two of the three goals against Olathe South, both in the first half. Trenkle was pulled up to play with the girls JV soccer team the previous week. The remaining goal was scored by freshman Sadie Jolicoeur in the second half. The girls overall record is four wins, one tie and two losses.
