Friday was the 60th annual celebration of Lancer Day. Students had a shortened class schedule and early dismissal to prepare for the parade. Between second and third hour, the upperclassmen boys took to the fourth-floor science hall bathroom for the traditional ‘bano’ chant ritual. Under the leadership of new principal Dr. Sherman, this resulted in disciplinary action for the involved parties.
Later that same day, the parade began at about 2 pm. In accordance with this year’s theme, decades, the Drill Team float was Disco, the sophomore class float was Wild Wild West, the junior class float was Holy Roman Empire, the senior class float was 90’s, and many more floats featured different themes. The parade started in the SM East front parking lot. One by one the floats traveled down Mission Road to the Prairie Village Shopping Center for the pep rally. At the pep rally, senior pep execs Emily Cooper, Hannah Phillips, and Hallie Higgason led chants. Prairie Village Mayor Laura Wassmer declared the day “Lancer Day.” Varsity football captains hyped the crowd up for their first game. And new varsity Head Coach Justin Hoover and student body President Jet Semrick spoke. After the pep rally, students left to get ready for varsity football season opener game against Gardner-Edgerton High School.
