The girls varsity basketball team fell to SM South 38-28 on Friday, Feb. 28 on Senior Night, which was their last game of the regular season. Going into Friday’s game, the Lancers held a record of 8-6, falling to the Olathe West Owls 51-24 the week prior.

During the first half of the game, the Raiders kept the Lancers to one free throw, ending the first quarter down 11-1. By the end of the second quarter, the Lancers were down 19-10.

At halftime, junior Fina Kessler promoted Hoops 4 Her, a non-profit organization founded by Kessler, focused on empowering girls around the world through basketball. Hoops 4 Her T-shirts were sold outside of the main gym to raise money to sponsor middle and highschool girls in Kenya, at Hoops 4 Her’s first all-girls basketball camp at Moi University in Eldoret, Kenya this summer.

During the second half, the Lancers trailed through the beginning of the fourth quarter, where they were down 31-17. The Lancers ended the game 38-28, bringing their record to 8-7 going into the postseason. The Lancers are currently ranked at 8 in the Sunflower League and 144 in the state of Kansas.

After the game, the Lancers took time to honor the team’s two senior players, Brie Murdoch and Laine Birch, for Senior Night before the boys varsity game began. Murdoch and Birch were escorted onto the court by their families as their name and post-high school plans were announced.

The Lancers are scheduled to play their first sub-state game on Wednesday, March 5 in a rematch against SM South at 7 p.m. The location is still being determined.
