Gallery: Girls and Boys Cross Country Place 3rd and 2nd at Regionals

The varsity boys and girls cross country team ran at regionals to qualify for state this past Saturday at Johnson County Community College. The girls team placed 3rd and the boys team placed 2nd, both qualifying for state. This is the first time in 15 years both the boys and girls team has qualified for state. On the girls side, junior Kate Kowalik finished at the top of East’s girls team with a time of 20:16. Where on the boys side, freshman Ben Rodriguez finished at the top of East’s boys team with a time of 16:46. State will be this Saturday, Nov. 2, 2019 at Rim Rock in Lawrence, Kansas. Boys will run at 10:35 a.m. and girls will follow at 12:20 p.m. After the meet head coach Tricia Beaham said, “Its just a great accomplishment for the sheer fact that it has been 15 years since we have had both the boys and girls go together. Every year we’ve had individuals go, where it’s been maybe one individual on both sides [of the boys and girls team], or just one. To have both of them [teams] just shows how tenacious that the teams were at their practice and during the meets. It makes it that much more enjoyable to watch 14 kids run rather than two or three.”
