The Sunrise Movement, an American youth-led movement and political action organization that advocates for political action on climate change, organized a rally in Mill Creak park yesterday. September 20 marked the day for a global climate crisis strike to enact a change to stop climate change. The climate strike was initiated by 16-year-old and Swedish climate activist, Greta Thunberg who said “Right now we are the ones who are making a difference. If no one else will take action, then we will.” This movement reached East through juniors Violet Apodaca, Paige Good, and sophomore Christian Alldredge who helped recruit and coordinate East students participating in the rally. Before the rally, students gathered in the cafeteria after school to make posters for the event. Apodaca, on the subject of why she got involved in the rally said, “This is just something I’ve cared about for a long time, and it’s really important to me and I feel like our future is dependent on wether our politicians and our government do something about climate change. I just really wanted to do something about it, and I feel like participating in something like this — I feel like I’m doing something”.
