Gallery: Boys Varsity Soccer Falls to Washburn Rural 4-2 in Penalty Shootout in 2025 6A State Championship

The boys varsity soccer team competed in the 6A state championship on Saturday, Nov. 8 against Washburn Rural for the second year in a row, and in East history.

The first goal of the night was scored by a Washburn midfielder, which gave them a 1-0 lead with 15 minutes left in the first half. Washburn kept their 1-0 lead going into halftime, but once the second half started, senior defender Andrew Hastert scored from 40 yards out. The game stayed tied until there were 8, minutes left and senior Parker Mahurin assisted a goal scored by senior Stephen Hlobik. The Lancers did not keep their lead as Washburn scored 3 minutes later. The score was tied 2-2 at the end of regulation and neither team scored a goal in the two 10-minute sudden death overtime halves. After the two overtime halves the game came down to penalty kicks. Seniors Stephen Hlobik, Parker Mahurin, Hudson Bennish and Owen Andrews all lined up to shoot. Washburn Rural defeated SM East 4-2 in penalty kicks. 

The Lancers finished their season as regional champions and state runner-ups.
