Gallery: Boys Varsity Basketball Falls to SM South 75-54 on Senior Night

The Lancers fell to the SM South Raiders in their last game of the regular season on Senior Night 75-54 on Friday, Feb. 28. Prior to Friday’s game the Lancers defeated the Olathe West Owls 59-58 and the Raiders defeated the Olathe South Falcons 63-56 on Tuesday, Feb. 25. According to KSHSAA, the Raiders currently hold the number one spot in the 6A Boys Varsity Basketball Division while the Lancers are ranked at 13 in the division.

Prior to tipoff, the Lancers took the time to honor their eight senior plays for senior night. Seniors Will Beck, Carter Brock, Cole Chinnock, Walt Jones, Smith McKinney, JJ Paben, Banks Prendiville and Logan Verschelden were escorted onto the court by their family as their names and post-high school plans were announced.

Junior Stephen Hlobik was the leading scorer with 18 points and senior Will Beck had the second most points with 16. The Lancers shot 76% from the free throw line and the Raiders shot at 54%. However, SM South shot 66% from the field and SM East shot at 44%. After the first quarter, the Lancers were down 21-11. By half, the Lancers were down 34-30.

During halftime the varsity Lancer Dancers performed their hip hop routine and the competition cheer team performed their competition routine as well. The winner of the Happy Bottoms Diaper Drive competition was also announced. The week leading up to the game the Lancers and the Raiders competed in a competition to see which school could collect the most diapers, SM South won collecting over 800 diapers that will be donated to Happy Bottoms.

The Lancers started the half down by four but by the middle of the fourth quarter, the lancers were down 64-48. The Lancers lost to the Raiders 75-54.

The Lancers are scheduled to play their first sub-state game on Tuesday, March 4 against Mill Valley at 7 p.m., the location is currently TBD.
