In the depths of Shawnee Mission East lies room 101, the Auto Tech room. It is here in the “dungeon,” as teacher Brian Gay likes to refer to it, that the aromas of gasoline, motor oil, and brake cleaner forever linger in the air. For the Auto Essentials and Auto 1 classes, the curriculum is geared more towards learning the ins and outs of the various systems that make up a car rather than the students getting their hands dirty. However, it is the complete opposite for Auto 2 and 3. Students enrolled in Auto 2 and 3 spend both their fifth and sixth hour in the shop working. Bookwork is kept to a minimum, as most of the learning is done on the various cars that come or stay in the shop. The class is only available to seniors who have previously climbed the ropes through Auto Essentials and Auto 1. Besides working on students’ cars, the class has been busy with two Porsche 911s, a Formula Ford, and a BMW 740iL.
