AP Physics 2 held their annual cardboard boat race regatta in the SM East pool on Wednesday, Dec. 6. Students and parents spectated the hour long event from the bleachers while admin and teachers watched from the pool deck. Boats that were competing in the race could only be two layers thick consisting of cardboard and duck tape. The boats were first placed in the water and competitors had to begin by sitting in the boat for 30 seconds before paddling to the other side. If the boat remained above water after 30 seconds, students were then given an oar to start their journey to the other side of the pool and back. AP Physics 2 teacher Miles Martin was timing each of the races.
Students worked on their boats throughout multiple class periods in attempt to develop a design stable enough to make it across the pool and back. Senior Chris Minto shares, “We had to do the calculation to find the buoyant force and the boat took three whole classes to make.” After the race concluded, awards were given to the two best costumes and the two fastest boat race times. Senior Ellie McDermed placed first in the costume contest and senior Ian Flynn placed first with the fastest boat race time.

Entering her third and final year on staff, senior Riley Scott could not be more thrilled to be one of the Head Photographer Editors. You can often times find Riley cheering on the sidelines of football games, diving at KU or nannying after school. Riley is also involved with Link Crew and NHS. In her free time she loves driving around listening to Taylor Swift, rewatching Gossip Girl or hanging around the pool with her friends. »
