Last Thursday after school in the library, students huddled around librarian Kathleen Knop’s iPad, to try to hear sophomore Lily Osborn’s poem “Lesson for My Little Wonder Woman.” They were there for East’s annual Poetry Slam.
“[The poems are] completely original so they can and should be a topic about which the poet has some passion, interest, experience, etc,” slam sponsor Laura Beachy said when describing slam poetry. “[The poems] become much more personal a lot of times.”
Going on five years, the slam saw four students enter, small compared to past years, according to Beachy. East will be sending all four students who performed, Osborn, junior Kyra Engelken and seniors Elena Wickstrom and Meghan Mohn, to the district poetry slam on May 4 at Horizons.
