Football Beat: Week 1

As parents and fans started to shuffle into the bleachers at Shawnee Mission East High School the Lancer Football team began to take the field for the annual Blue/Black Scrimmage.  Although it was a Friday night at the end of August it still felt like a practice to Chip Sherman and the rest of the team.

“We just need to make sure we get better everyday.”  Sherman said. “If we do that then we will be right back where we want to be.”  The team started out running through all of their special teams then moved onto the offensive and defensive sides of the ball.

One of the big stories of the night was Dakota Collins and how he would be able to handle running the Shawnee Mission East offense.  Collins was a transfer student from Wyandotte High School and has been working out with the team since last winter. He was very efficient in his debut but as any player under Sherman knows there is always room for improvement.

“I felt like the offense worked pretty well tonight but we always have stuff we need  to improve on.  Especially this early in the season.”  Collins said.  He went on to say that he hadn’t talked to quarterback coach and SME Athletic director Sam Brown yet so he knew he would have plenty to improvements he needed to make on by the end of that conversation.

Another one of the Highlights from Friday night was getting to see Coach Sherman out on the sidelines again.  During the off season Sherman was diagnosed with cancer and has been undergoing chemo therapy all summer.  Sherman may start the season with less hair and more on his mid than he did last season.  However he always has had the same heart and desire to lead his team and all he’s focused on right now is next weeks practice.

As the varsity players left the field the fans were entertained by the Freshman vs. Sophomore scrimmage.  As the class on 2015 took the field for the first time.  The players made there way up to the parking lot to mingle with parents and make plans for their victory in less then a week against Shawnee Mission Northwest.

All In.
