New England Patriots Win Super Bowl

Last night, the 2014 NFL season ended with the New England Patriots besting the Seattle Seahawks 28-24 in the Super Bowl. The first half of the game went quickly and resulted in a tie between the Patriots and the Seahawks at the half. In the third quarter, the Seahawks pulled ahead after capitalizing on an interception from Patriots’ quarterback Tom Brady. The Patriots got in the lead in the fourth quarter, and although the Seahawks launched an offensive rally and Jermaine Kearse caught a miracle pass, the Patriots still won four points in the lead.

Nation’s Groundhog Predicts Continual Winter

America’s favorite groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, has announced today that there will supposedly be six more weeks of winter. At 7:25 a.m. in Punxsutawney, Pa., Phil delivered his prediction after her spotted his shadow. While last year was the hottest year on record, Phil’s shadow-sighting as well as the snowstorm in the Northeast, Juno, could be seen as another predictor of colder weather.

New Mexico Toddler Shoots Parents

In a motel room in Albuquerque, N.M. on Saturday, a three-year-old boy shot both of his parents with a gun. The boy was reaching into his mother’s purse to retrieve an iPod when he grabbed the gun. The bullet passed through his father and hit his pregnant mother in the arm, but did not hit his two-year-old sister. While both parents were in the hospital for a period of time, the father has since been released. It is yet to be determined whether the parents will or will not face charges of negligence.

Pizzeria Locale to Open in Kansas City

Denver’s Pizzeria Locale will open in Waldo this summer, next to the Chipotle on 75th Street. Pizzeria Locale first opened in Denver as part of a partnership between two Colorado restaurateurs and Chipotle, which opened its first Kansas City location in 1998.

The restaurant will serve individual pizzas, whose toppings customers can decide, as well as wines and local craft beers. Like Chipotle, Pizzeria Locale uses fresh ingredients, easy-to-read menus and quick service.

Hawklets Beat Lancers in Varsity Basketball

Last Friday night, the Rockhurst boys varsity basketball team beat the Lancers 70-44. The highly-anticipated game began at 7 p.m. in Rockhurst’s gym, with hundreds of East students crammed into the bleachers. Although Rockhurst had already played five more games than the Lancers, the anticipation of a win was still palpable.

Led by seniors Cartier Dean and Patrick Geha, the Rockhurst Hawklets outscored the Lancers with aggressive offense. At the half, the team was down by 20 points, and despite efforts by seniors Jack Flint and Lucas Jones, the Lancers lost to Rockhurst for the first time in two years.
