Mark your calendars for Thursday, May 26. The Shawnee Mission School District has determined that the final day of school will remain unchanged for high school students, finding that it could still meet minimum student contact hours under the current schedule with a few adaptations.
In the wake of a record number of inclement weather days, administrators were left puzzled about how to address the situation and students left worrying that the school year might be extended.
In Kansas, a school year can be defined as 186 school days (181 for seniors), or 1,116 hours (1,086 for seniors). The days and hours are counted when the school is operational and instructing students. Shawnee Mission administrators found that by removing late starts and early dismissals from the schedule, all schools and students would be able to meet the state mandated minimum.
Students can rest assured that even with six snow days during the year, summer break will begin right on time.
