I hate any sort of apocalyptic movies.
Whether it's the over-dramatized, cliché plots or the constant fear-provoking scenes, I can hardly get through the first 30 minutes without getting irritated and turning my TV off.
So, when I began watching “A House of Dynamite,” a Netflix thriller, I wasn’t looking forward to the impending doom these movies usually bring. Still, I wanted to give the current number one movie on Netflix a shot. And to my surprise, in the almost two hours I spent watching the film, I could hardly look away from my screen.
The opening statement alone — “At the end of the Cold War, global powers reached the consensus that the world would be better off with few nuclear weapons. That era is now over.” — had me hooked.
The film was split into three parts, each following different perspectives of the 18 minutes before an intercontinental ballistic missile, an ICBM, is planned to hit a present-day U.S. city.
The first part follows Major Daniel Gonzalez, played by Anothony Ramos, who works at Fort Greely in Alaska, where the missile is first identified, and Captain Olivia Walker, played by Rebecca Ferguson, who reports to the White House Situation Room and reviews the missile's developments.
Even though I was at first confused by the constant back-and-forth perspectives of both Gonzalez and Walker, both characters gave me a sense of how fast and crucial communication between the military and the government in D.C. truly is in dire situations.
As both Walker and Gonzalez come to realize the ICBM isn’t a test, pure chaos ensues within the government as the U.S. Defense Readiness Condition makes its way to level one — nuclear war imminent.
From the realistic depiction of the White House to Walker's raw emotions as she realizes she may never see her family again, I was captivated by how lifelike the situation felt.
Although I often hate when movies create a sense of sudden fear, I truly felt immersed in the pure panic the high-ranking government officials were experiencing as they tried to stay calm and figure out how to save their country.
The next two parts of the film covered the perspectives of Deputy National Security Advisor Jake Baerington, played by Gabriel Basso, and the U.S. president, played by Idris Elba.
With only 18 minutes to decide whether to launch counterattacks against U.S. adversaries and risk nuclear war or risk doing nothing and hope for a fluke, both Baerington and the president had to make quick, critical decisions.
Although I quickly became irritated at the constant miscommunication and confusing military lingo, it wasn't enough to overpower how badly I wanted the film to continue and explain the final decisions regarding the missile attack.
Even with back-to-back storylines and stress radiating off my TV screen, by the end of the movie, I wasn't lost in the information or overwhelmed by the fear captured through the various characters.
I truly enjoyed seeing how the various branches of government handled the tension of nuclear invasion and enemy aggression, creating a mix of politics and thrill. The story seemed eerily real and made me really think about how this dire situation could play out in our country, making it more realistic than the average apocalypse movie.
“A House of Dynamite” was original, thought-provoking and unlike most thrillers, it actually interested me from start to finish.
