East’s girls’ soccer team makes All-Sunflower League

Eight East girls were selected for the soccer All-Sunflower League list this past weekend. Of the first team, sophomore Addison Steiner made forward , senior Molly Rappold made midfielder along with junior Caroline Dodd, junior Lizzy McConnell made defender and graduate Jessie Jacob made first team goalkeeper.

Senior Kirstin Clark made second team defense. Clark was the only East player to make second team.
Among the players that made honorable mention were junior Katie Crawford and senior Heather Nelson.
Along with the players’ awards, coach Jamie Kelly was awarded the All-Sunflower League coach of the year.
Rappold didn’t know she made the list until Sunday afternoon.
“Since it’s regionals now for club soccer, I wasn’t really focused on the list,” Rappold said. “When I did find out I made it, I was very excited.”
The girls were strong contenders at this year’s state tournament as well, winning their way to the quarterfinals in sub-state where they lost to Blue Valley Northwest. In the quarterfinal sub-state game, East scored first, but were denied a goal due to a call by the referee.
According to Rappold, the new found strength of the team came from better communication and quicker plays. “I don’t think any of us expected to be this good,” Rappold said. “We surprised a lot of people.”
