Eastipedia: SHARE

SHARE is the volunteering organization at East, which allows students to participate in a variety of service projects that benefit the community. SHARE stands for Students Helping in Areas Related to Education. One of the most important things about SHARE is that it’s student led.

SHARE is the largest student-led school volunteer organization in the country. This year, it’s offering about 35 projects. The program is funded by donations from people in the community, fundraisers and community grants, their main fundraiser being the Renovation Sensation tour in the fall.

SHARE is run by eight student executives along with part-time staff and several student chairs. The executives and staff are in charge of organizing projects, acquiring goods, organizing adult volunteers, distributing information about the projects to participants and promoting them. Every project has a Chairperson who is in charge of communicating with volunteers, generally students, and making sure they are informed about whichever project they are participating in.

The projects range in a wide variety of things, from trick-or-treating with abused children at The Children’s Place to helping at a food pantry. Most projects are close to East in order to accommodate for as many volunteers as possible. Projects occur during school days, at night and during weekends. This allows students to be able to find a project that works with their schedule.

This year’s new projects include Junior Board, in which students learn more about nonprofits and compete to raise money for them, and Pack of Pals, which pairs special and regular education students so they can form bonds in and outside of school.
